Ella had jumped out of her Mother’s arms and is sitting on the ground wondering; what was going on? The wet cool weather, and changing seasons, take such a long time to pass, that this little seed was going to have a lot of time to grow.
Having never been alone before Ella was feeling scared and lonely.
The twins, Albert and Allison, never made it to the ground, while they were making their journey from Mother’s arms , a soaring bird swooped down and grabbed first one, then the other. I heard their squeals of joy and laughter, they waved good bye, as they soared into the sky. Last time I seen them, they were firmly held in the safety of that birds grip, rising higher and higher, never to be seen again.
Eric, he gave up the piece of land that he fell into, he broke on the way down and he never truly got planted.
Little Ami was grabbed by a funny little animal, who took her gently in its mouth, and tried to return her to our mother, only to find that Ami was filled with the dickens, and refused do stay where she was put!
With all the activity taking place around her, Ella was still a bit worried, she didn’t know what she was waiting for. Her mother never told her that part of the story, only that she was supposed to rest and take her time. So Ella, goes to sleep.
When Ella wakes up, she spends some time looking at the beautiful forest around her, then looks way up at her mother. Never realizing, how much energy it would take to travel from so high up from Mother‘s arms, and the things she would encounter on the long journey to the soft Earth so far below. Ella was still feeling but bruised from her jump, and slightly confused as to what will happen next.
Ella knows that she feels safe enough in Mother’s shadow, that she continues to sleep away the seasons, and dreams of all the stories that her Mother had told her while she grew..
As Ella sleeps the months away that it takes for her to grow into a seedling and then a sprout, she dreams of her Mother standing proudly swaying in the breeze above her, smiling gently down at her offspring as she watched one after another of us, leave the safety of her arms and spread out before her. Ella’s dream is so real, that she can see her Mother clearly.
In her dream, Ella can hear Mother telling her, that she has taken good care of all her children; but, the time has come for them to find a piece of Earth around her in this vast and beautiful protected area to make a home for themselves.
It will take many more years for them all to grow to their full potential. Until then, Mother said that she wants them all to feel safe and secure. So, she will continue to feed them the life saving nutrients that they will need to grow, and thrive, until they can stand proudly on their own!
As Ella sleeps, Mother stands tall swaying in the breeze protecting all of her children. Ella’s dreams are flooded with memories from all the many different adventures that her Mother had told her about; from the sailing ships with cloth winds, to the loud sounds of cannon fire, she dreamt of Mother solemnly telling her of the terrifying zipping sounds of saws.
One of the dreams Ella has, is of the time Mother told her about when she watched one after another of her older siblings being taken away to be made into other things. She remembered so clearly their painful cries, when the saws cut into their sturdy trunks.
Mother told us that she was still so small back then, that the men didn’t want her.
One of Mother’s best stories, and a favourite of Ella’s, was when she told them all about the time the men in yellow hats were heard talking about changing the land, and protecting trees like her.
Ella dreamed about that one man, she saw him as he stroked Mother’s rough exterior. Mother saying, that his hand on her body had felt good.
Ella also dreamed about the relief Mother felt, when she had heard them talk about the fact that if they Protected the land, trees like her, and her family would always remain safe, no one else would become a plank for a ships deck, or a table for men to dine upon!
Mother grew so tall over the years, that she was able to see above all their heads, and she looked out at a world that kept changing.
Ella’s dreams gave her a feeling of comfort, and safety, especially the dreams of when the men in yellow hats came, and they protected this land and began calling her home, Park.
When Ella awoke, she found that she had experienced many changes in herself. She was happy that she had listened to all of Mother’s stories, now she understood that this was where she would live the rest of her life surrounded by her siblings, her brothers and sisters, who, one after another had also found themselves on the ground. Although, some of them didn’t completely understand that they too would lead separate lives from each other. Maybe they didn’t listen close enough when Mother told her stories.
Now that Ella was a sapling, she looked around herself, and her family, she reached upward with pride, happy in the knowledge that her siblings, now had room to spread their arms, so that they too, will grow healthy and strong.
Then Ella, looks way up; she feels herself bursting with pride. “Mother you are the most beautiful tree in the world,“ Ella whispers quietly, “ One day, I want to be big, just like you!”
This is the family of the Giant Sequoia’s, strong and hardy, standing proudly over many generations, facing many challenges, and watching so many changes. Here they will be left alone in this place called Park, where the Earth protects the little ones, and nature hopefully takes good care of the rest!
