These assignments from Session 6 (I think!)
The beating heart:
This took a lot of thought, but I finally realized the book, Traveling with an Angel on my Shoulder, is about my success at occasionally overcoming the physical and emotional limitations imposed by on me by Charcot-Marie Tooth syndrome. The hereditary, neuro-muscular disease created a childhood with plenty of well-meaning ‘no you can’t’ comments from my parents. It changed to YES, I CAN when, in my late 30s, I was invited to join a national Canadian travel magazine. That would involve travel. With some acknowledged limitations. I wouldn’t accept a golf trip! And I want to encourage my granddaughter, who sadly inherited CMT.
Most important: Trying things I thought impossible. Also overcoming an inferiority complex caused by my lack of education. I left a Franco-era Spanish convent as soon as I turned 14 and had no further formal studies.
Universal theme:
There’s a world out there that’s full of wonder if you can try overcoming your fears.
What questions:
My own question is ‘How did I possibly land a 30-year career as a travel writer?’ It was all about being in the right place at the right time. Or was it? I am sure there was something much deeper at work, much more spiritual. So many things seemed designed to assuage my fears.
